Races Jan.6, 7 & 8th. Thoughts?

Postby bnd » Sun Jan 08, 2012 10:22 pm

I'm pretty sure the Saturday nights race was the largest single pointer Rad Canyon indoors has ever posted. We have had bigger RFL's but those are little different. Nice work to all that raced & helped out.

I have got to give a shout to the Dirt Diva & her cruiser class Sunday. After she raced an obstacle course 5k on Saturday up in Heber City she was feeling it on Sunday. Training has paid off for Ervin & it looked like a 2nd place in the main for d until she hiked up her skirt & won her main with some good drag racing & charging that step up going into the first turn like a mad woman. I honestly haven't been so stoked for her racing a local in a long time.

Another shout out goes to Surfer boy for being the only inter making the Open Wheels main. You know that counts as 5 wins in inter, right?

Scott Tauls lap was touching & once again, the Meltons showed pure class in how it was presented. A few long timer O.S. racers showed up out of the blue I haven't seen in ages too to pay respect.

I finally met SS Steve & Skew.

One lesson I learned over the weekend, bring an extra set of clothes for your 4 yr. old. With water, mudd, & horse poop all around, it's only a matter of time it gets all over him....& I mean ALL over him.

haha, I saw that pit of horse poop down there. I should have looked harder for the 4 yo footprints in it.

It was nice to finally meet you Brett. I had a great time at the races, but I'll definitely be bringing a trainer or rollers for my bike next time; I got too stiff between races. I think it was over 2.5 hours between my first qualifier and the main. It was a long night, but I had a blast. So many nice people and a HUGE turnout. The 28+ open was my favorite race to watch. There was a lot of power out there on the track, and it was crazy how fast those guys can move. HUGE props to the Meltons for running such a successful program that we're getting so many people out.

I had a blast! Even running cruiser, class and the open, I didn't feel like I had gotten much fatigue--I guess the training is paying off--flipping tires has it's advantages, Dallas, I think you should join us! wait... no, scratch that....

I'll be in for the open every time in the upcoming weeks, not only is it a great time to gate up with guys I don't normally get to race, it's great training for nationals.

I'm pleased with how I rode over the weekend but more proud of my 2 boys than anything. With Collin getting his 8th 5 & Under Novice win to move on to intermediate (he thinks he's a rock star now) and Lucas' desire to step it up and push himself again and picking up 2 wins in a tough 8x class, they were the high point of the weekend for me.

This sport is amazing and that comes from the awesome BMX family we have in Utah (and our adopted out of staters).

Good times, good times!

Fantastic weekend! Even with 8 inches of pow at Snowbird, I was hardly (okay, kinda sorta) tempted (for those who who know me, this is unheard of). My family and I had so many great experiences. Thanks to all who made it possible. In particular I want to thank the following (I am sure I will forget someone; please forgive).
The Meltons and all of the regular track volunteers for their always excellent, but rarely appreciated, efforts in making these events so entertaining and successful. These people work behind the scenes, out of the spotlight, all in an effort to help us have fun and pursue our passion. This weekend they worked especially hard overcoming technical glitches and processing the large number of participants.
GT and Lake Town Bicycles (BJ, Steve Spencer, Phil, and Will). Thank you for sponsoring the weekend, providing prizes, and bringing in Mike Day.
Mike Day. What a class act. How often do you see an Olympic medalist pick up a rake and help build a BMX track? Mike did it on Friday and then went on to help run a great clinic on Saturday and still take time to sign the upteenth sticker, poster, jersey, bike, etc, etc for my kids. Thank you for the great BMX tips and for being a good role model and hero for my boys.
Heather, Dave and Steve. Thank you for an excellent clinic. Despite a huge turnout, you provided meaningful, one-on-one attention and helped everyone improve their skills. You provided professional, helpful and friendly advice. Thank you BJ for your advice on the rhythms. Thank you Dave and Steve for your advice on the gate. Thank you all for your help and advice to my sons.

Here are just a few of my highlights of the weekend:
Taking a few laps with my brother. I finally got my younger brother to come out to the track and ride some practice laps with me. Like most brothers we are competitive in everything we do; skiing, climbing, Mt. Bikes, skateboarding, etc, etc. Now we can add BMX to the list. I think its just a matter of time before he and his son are racing on a regular basis. I also had my neighbor and his two sons and daughter out to the races. His daughter was in the big wheels, but will be in 5 and under novice next time. His two sons did great and will soon be regulars.
Riding my new bike. This was my first race on the new 2012 GT Speed Series. I love this bike! Thanks to BJ at Lake Town for such an awesome build. He and Steve Spencer made me feel like a rock star when I picked it up last Thursday night. It was sitting in the rack, right at the front of the store, perfectly shiny and new! Loved how the bike felt all weekend. It even made a slug like me fast out of the gate. Its always fun to get new toys, but this one of THE best toys I've ever had.
Meeting Mike Day. I already mentioned this above, but this was a great experience. I had the chance to chat with Mike as we were raking the track on Friday. He was very down-to-earth and gracious. He took time to talk with my boys and showed genuine interest. As I was leaving the track on Friday afternoon, I noticed Mike and Jonas doing sprints in the parking lot. I just happened to have my bike in the back of the Tahoe. :P I hesitated for a minute, but then decided this was a once in a lifetime chance. So I pulled out my bike rode over to where they were doing sprints. They graciously allowed me to join the fun! Pretty dang cool to do sprints with an Olympic silver medalist (okay, Mike and Jonas were doing sprints, I was riding like a snail, trying not to fall off my clips with my regular shoes). Mike and Jonas certainly made me feel like one of the cool kids. Thank You!
28+ Open Wheels. Great race. Great competitors. Great fun. Loved this event. Thank you for starting this up. Like I mentioned in the other topic section, it was so amazing to gate up with my local heroes. So much fun to see how I measure up to the super fast folks out there. I really enjoyed the vibe of this race. Hal, I am sorry I pushed you up so high in the quarter (semi?). I was flying through the rhythms, had too much speed for how low I was, I panicked and started to move up way too fast. I apologize if I was out of line. Looking forward to the next race.
Logan, my 11 year old, got his 8th win and moved up to intermediate! I am so proud of him. He finished up the weekend with a 3rd in a tough 11 Inter class in his first race as an intermediate. Alex (6 yrs old) also stepped it up and finished up 4th. Garrett (8 yrs old), also did well and was excited to race some of his friends from the neighborhood.

Thanks again for the great times! We have it good in Utah BMX :P

No problem Chris. I was mad. Not at you for the move, but at myself for giving you the opportunity to make it. If I hadn't left the door open you wouldn't have been able to take advantage of it. I'll try no to let that happen again. See you soon.

Thanks Hal. I know you are way too smart and fast to let that happen again. Let's keep showing that we can hang with the big dawgs in the 28 Open Class

FYI- got an email from the ABA today, Rad Canyon owners the record for number of riders at a single point local race. Thanks to all the riders and their families!

Wow, what a great weekend!
Even crashing in my main on Saturday couldn't ruin it (winning on Sunday didn't hurt either)!
I think we had more people in the clinic than most tracks have at a race!
The opportunity to participate in the 28 & Over open, getting to pass Jonas (he came unclipped), getting to pass Kevin Dilley (he crashed), getting passed by Jonas in the rythum section like I was parked (he got clipped back in) and that was only the first race!
The competition was fierce but the competitors were not, that's Utah BMX to me!
Thanks to everybody for everything you do to keep this scene going!

Doug takes AWESOME pictures. I'm so glad he does that. Hopefully enough people buy his photos to pay for his operating costs. I'm sure it's not cheap to be a member of that website.

The photos are great. I hope to pick a few up of the boys and I. Spoke with Doug on Saturday, he seemed like a nice guy. Like you mentioned Steve, I hope he keeps shooting photos at the races.
