Utah BMX Hall of Fame

Postby J Gallo » Thu Sep 16, 2004 8:04 am

It was brought up on another thread the idea of creating a Utah BMX Hall of Fame (Thanks TP!). Since I'd like to get some ideas, I decided to start a whole new thread.

Personally, I think it's an awesome idea. It would expand upon the popular "Top 10 Utah BMX'ers" thread that bnd has put so much time into.

So let's start putting our heads together and come up with some criteria to nominate riders. For example:

Should there a minimum number of years they need to be involved in Utah BMX? Say, 10 years?

Should there be a minimum number of National wins? State Championships? etc....

Should it take into account volunteer time at local tracks?

Should we limit it to only riders? Or should there be a section for TO's, Volunteers, etc?

I'm guessing this would be a website only feature, or should there some "physical" award?

I'd like to hear some your comments and suggestions, and also what info you'd like to see on the page.

That is a great idea, i think we should start with the ABA and find out how they do the Hall of Fame. Meaning what is their criteria and lets use it to model our Hall of Fame!

Once we have a model we can tweek it to fit our situation!

HALL OF FAME IDEA.

Postby PEDDLEPUSHER » Thu Sep 16, 2004 1:31 pm

I THINK THAT THIS IS A GREAT IDEA.
JASON, YOU TALKED ABOUT CRITERIA, AND MENTIONED POSSIBLY INCLUDING THE NUMBER OF NATIONALS WON, ALONG WITH STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS ETC.
YOU ALSO GAVE THE POSSIBILITY OF NON RIDERS, SUCH AS TRACK OPERATORS, SPONSORS AND ALL ARE GREAT IDEAS. YOU CERTAINLY DONT NEED TO RIDE A BIKE TO HAVE BEEN A MAJOR INFLUENCE ON THIS GREAT SPORT OF OURS.

I HAVE ONE COMMENT ABOUT INCLUDING NATIONALS IN JUDGING ONES WORTHINESS TO BE INDUCTED. I KNOW THAT MANY PEOPLE USE THAT AS A GAUGE FOR SUCCESS IN OUR SPORT, NOT ONLY HERE, BUT NATIONALLY TOO, BUT I DISAGREE WITH THAT ISSUE.
THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE WHO CANNOT ATTEND NATIONALS, BOTH FOR FINANCIAL REASONS, AND IN SOME INSTANCES BECAUSE IT INTERFERES WITH SCHOOL AND OTHER COMMITMENTS MADE FOR OTHER MEMBERS OF THEIR FAMILIES.

IF THIS IS TRULY TO BE A ''UTAH BMX HALL OF FAME'', IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THE MAIN CRITERIA SHOULD BE BASED ON WHAT ONE HAS DONE IN THE STATE OF UTAH TO FURTHER THE SPORT, AND BRING SUCCESS TO THE PROGRAMS. THAT TOO IS WHY I THINK THAT RIDERS SHOULD NOT BE THE ONLY ONES INCLUDED. TO'S, SPONSORS AND FANS ARE JUST AS IMPORTANT TO THE SUCCESS OF BMX HERE IN UTAH AS THE RIDERS THEMSELVES. IF A RIDER HAS DISTINGUISHED THEMSELVES ON A NATIONAL BASIS, THEY SHOULD THEN BE INDUCTED INTO THE ABA'S HALL OF FAME, IN THE ARENA WHERE THEY HAVE MADE SUCH ACCOMPLISHMENTS.

ITS GETTING EXCITING TO SEE ALL OF THE POSITIVE IDEAS AND ATTITUDES COMING ABOUT HERE IN THE LAST FEW DAYS...I'M PUMPED!

KEEP IT UP,

RIDE HARD:)

Those sound like some good suggestions. And we'll definitely look at including those in whatever criteria get decided on.

I think that is exactly what our HOF should be about. But I don't want to totally rule out National accomplishments by local riders either.

This could turn out to be one incredible idea. Because it's one that ALL UTAH BMX'ers will have a hand in creating.

TP's created a monster!

Also, you mentioned possibly Fan's in the HOF. Another excellent idea. For example, the Green Bay Packers have a special Fan Hall of Fame, so the same idea could work for ours too. But one question, should we have separate HOF's for riders, TO's, fans, etc, or just create subcategories of one main HOF?

I think I just got goosebumps....

I agree with PEDDLEPUSHER and not including Nationals or don't let that have too much influence. I missed the SLC Nationals this year for reasons beyond my control. I also missed the Reno Nationals because of health issues. If Nationals are included, don't let it have that much impact. I do think the whole HOF idea is AWESOME!

I don't see a way of not counting national success. If this happens you can take Mike Poulsons name off the list. for those of you who weren't around during his hay day. he would go on the summer national tour all summer and we would never even see him at all. also , what about my own situation, I can't race locally because there aren't enough pros. so I quess my last three seasons don't count? how riders do at big races seperate the good from the great. if you have two or three local riders who win every time but only one of them can compete at a higher level who is the best out of the three? after all it is the hall of FAME.

Just a quick example. in 2001 I was district #6 & #7. but I was NAG #1 on both bikes along with Redline cup#1 and Race of champions #1. I was national #3 & #14. So if I am understanding some opinions right. the district number 1,2,3,4,5 of that year are more deserving to go in the HOF than myself? you just can't penalize a rider for moving on to bigger and greater challenges. I guess I should reclassify because winning the state championship would mean more than winning the national #1 vet pro?

just a thought? I believe the ABA inducts one non rider every year. they also have all the former inductees vote on who gets in. there are a bunch of nominees and only the ones who get enough votes get in. it's just like the baseball HOF. you can be on the ballot more than once you just have to get enough votes to make it. so you might only get one rider in one year and three the next. peace,TP

OOOOOOO TP, them's fighting words! How dare you expose that I wear Barney PJ's, I told you that in confidence! :) Now I'm gonna have to switch back to my Spiderman underoo's!

Don't worry, I won't tell anyone about your Wonder Woman night light you still use

Anyway, you are right about the national scene and how it applies to you, and also to Arielle Martin. Both of you are excelling on the Pro National scene, and we will definitely take that into consideration.

There are so many details to sort through and put into place. It will take awhile to put all this together but once we do it should be a pretty sweet feature.

I'd say probably at this point, if we're really serious about doing this, we should organize some sort of committee to work out the details and criteria. Maybe like 3 or 4 people that have been around Utah BMX for awhile.

However we do it, it should be fun to watch it evolve!
