when I was still holding my son up long long ago, he had these funky brakes that had a release lever. When he would get in the gate I would reach down and release the brakes so if he pulled them, he had nothing.
The downside was that I would have to run to the finish line and catch him when he came off the track

YES..When Lynzee first started she wuold pedal down the starting hill with her brakes on. I gradually loosened the brakes until there were none. I only had to do this for a short time(1 mos?) untill she got used to the staring hill. Of course back then I didn't have to worry about her plowing thru the finish line because the last obstacle was so big she could hardly get over it.

as a joke I used to tell my buddies kid, who I held up when he was 3 and 4 since his dad was holding up the older one, I used to tell him that I put thumb tacks on his seat so he had to stand up and pedal all the way to the finish line when we could take the tacks off so he could sit down.
must have worked the kid won a few gray plates

That is so funny! I told Guy when he was a novice about tacks on the seat!

Guy is doing pretty good! He has gotten taller (5 ft 7in) and heavier (122lbs) and now it is throwing him off! He is working on it though! How is your son doing? I believe I remember you and your son. Didn't you make a comment about the size of our Utah boys? I really wish we were coming back this year! That track was so cool!!!

Seat??? Dead weight, just remove it. By the way,I also turn off my own brakes...it's hard to go skidding up to the 35 foot table top without brakes!! (I do like the new step up though)
