I am working on some of the details and coordinating with the facilities for the proposed summer camps. I want to get some feedback on a couple of the ideas I had:
1) Camp Categories - Depending on the response and number of riders who wish to participate, I was thinking of breaking the camps into age and proficiency groups. The first weekly session would be for younger novices and intermediates (10 & Under or 12 & Under???). The second session would be for the older novices and intermediates (11 or 13 & Over???). The third session would be for Experts only. It will be a hardcore "bootcamp" that will be for only serious racers who are ready to take on the challenge.
2) Proposed Dates - Based on my and the potential guest instructors schedules, I was looking to set the following dates:
- July 5-7 (12 & under Nov & Int) Shorter session (3 days) for the younger riders.
- July 17-21 (Expert) 5-day session.
- July 25-28 (13 & over Nov & Int) 4-day session
3) Times - The proposed daily schedule would be from 8:00am - 5:00pm. On Tuesdays and Thursdays the camp would be extended till the end of practice or racing at Rad Canyon (approximately 9:00pm).
4) Price - I was comparing costs of other multi-day camps (SuperCamp, Applied Training, Woodward, etc) to see what they were charging compared to what we could offer with out the cost of lodging.
- SuperCamp (4-day camp w/o lodging) $250.00
- Applied BMX (5-day camp w/o lodging) $550.00
- Woodward (7-day camp w/ lodging) $900.00
Based on the current expenses involved (gym, transportation, guest instructor fees, meals, etc) I am planning to charge the following rate per rider:
- Session #1 (3-days 12& Under Nov-Int) $150.00
- Session #2 (5 days Experts only) $250.00
- Session #3 (4 days 13& Over Nov-Int) $200.00
The camps will be structured to accomodate each group with a focus to bring out the potential from each individual. A general overview of the camp curriculum:
- Gates
- Turns
- Jumping & Pumping
- Manualing
- Track strategy
- Reading your competition
- Mental preparation
- Diet
- Strength conditioning
- Sprints
- Balance drills
- Bike maintenence
- & more
Some of the other activities will include:
- skatepark
- swimming
- ping pong
- local racing
- a tour of OGIO and the famous foam pit!
- and some other SPECIAL surprises!
Each participant will undergo a final assessment at the end of the camp and will receive a training program to follow based on their current abilities and goals.
So not to lose the "personal touch" and one-on-one time with each participant I would like to keep the size of each session between 10-12 riders.
Please provided any feedback you may have in order to make these camps the best possible.
Thank you,
Steve

Steve,
I think this is an excellent and well thought out plan. Its good to see something like this locally.
One instructor I would really like to see is Jason Rogers. He is fast developing a reputation as one of the best little guy coaches out there and apparently has a very good rep with some top riders. I know Chris Blevins flies down to Dallas to train with him. Do you have a hookup with him?
I really see most expert kids under 10 - including mine - have skills more like Intermediates. Maybe the 12 & Under Novie and Inter group could be called 12 & Under. What are your thoughts?
Good work Steve!

Curtis,
Good points. These are things to like to have thrown back at me.
I know Jason Rogers and he is a possibility. I dont want to get everyone excited too soon but here is a list of possible guest instructors:
- Mike Day NBL #1
- Robert deWilde UCI SX #1
- Donny Robinson Current ABA, NBL, UCI points leader
- Josh Oie 2-time ABA National #1 Amatuer
- Jason Rogers Top AA pro
- Nate Berkheimer Top AA and pro dirt jumper
- Dusty Armstrong Top A pro
- Todd Parry #2 Vet Pro
- Arielle Martin #2 Girl Pro
I have talked to some already and they have expressed an interest in helping out. The fee to bring them out is substantial and is a factor without knowing what the camp attendance may be.
The addition of the younger experts with the intermediates is a great observation. There are some that may choose to work with the older experts for the experience and competition. The Expert Only camp will be significantly tougher than the other camps.
Thanks,
Steve

Steve,
I am surprised there are not more people chiming in on this. This camp would be an excellent opportunity for our riders, but its going to need participation and interest!
You bring up a valid point regarding the costs. Just running some quick estimates, it would cost $800 - $1200 just to pay the expenses for a pro to come in for, say, four days. Thats without thier personal fee which I would guess is $100 to $200+ a day. This is going to take bucks.
I can't help but wonder if there is really only going to be enough riders to fund one camp session to start out with? Maybe a four day camp? If this does go to a full three session camp I would think that you are going to have to reach out to riders in surrounding states to pull in enough $$$
Either way, you have Bennett for sure. I will sell a kidney or an eye if I have to

I'll definately put Spencer in, and I might be able to get his friend Brandon (14 nov) to attend.
It'd be great to get some riders from surrounding area tracks to fill in whatever group is lacking. I'd be willing to bunk a couple of kids if need be to get more involvement from other areas.
