The S.L. County Fair races, looking ahead.
There are only a few of us old timers still racing that remember when they used to have a BMX race at the State or County fairs in the early 80's. Last one I remember was in 83' at the State Fair. HUGE crowds were passing by & the exposure was awesome.
I'm just wondering for this years event has there been any thought of what the track is going to be like? Is there going to be plenty of dirt to be had? ect, ect.
This is a great opportunity to spread the word about BMX to the masses & every person should do his/her part to promote it. The ABA sent me a bunch of the "New Rider Manuals" to handed out but I only have about 10-15. These things are great & I hope there is a booth or a full-time person handing these things out & answering questions about BMX.
I hope this event is loud & flashy as to get the attention of the casual passerby. Can Roland announce?
I hope the track has a pro section right by the stands so the passerbys can get an up-close look at BMXers going for it.
I also hope the track design promotes close, tight racing & not single-file racing that gets boring to watch after 3 motos.
Just thinking out loud here, powers that be, so don't take it personal. Just throwing out ideas. I do know that I'll do my part of taking advantage of this once in a year situation & make the most of it.

SL Fair
I am so looking forward to the Fairgrounds racing this summer. B- I still remember the old days of the coloseum and the beef building racing! That place looks so much smaller now-LOL.
Roland- I hope you can call it!
TO's and powerful people- let's take full opportunity to show off BMX!
I can't wait for the fair!

BND,
I like you am looking forward to the racing at the fairgrounds!!!
WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We need people to help with the following
Track building and tear down
Track officials
and Of great importance we need folks to be ambassadors to help with manning a tent for Q & A!!! Volunteers need to be 16+ yrs old and very knowledgable about BMX! Also we need them to be friendly and helpful.
We would like to have a pro class so what do we need to do to get them out?
The fair tells us there are going to 60,000 people there during the week of the fair. We are racing wed thru sat.
Ok to answer the questions
Lots of dirt!!!!!! As much as we want!!!!!!!!!
No pro section we dont have the space.
I would love to have Roland announce, what do we need to get him to announce and be there every night?
You guys are right we have a chance to show off the sport of BMX, what can we all do to make this a reality?
There are lots of ideas and we need to get the ideas implemented and made a reality!

I think this race needs to be treated in more importance than the national, just for the fact of the exposure it's going to get.
I'm going to do my part in promoting it for sure, not sure how I can come out & help but if I can I will. Like I said I hope the track design is more of a DP design than a RC. I swear if there is a roller right out of the gate like all the indoor races, I'm taking a shovel to it!!
I'm going to spread the word to the surrounding states & let people know.
As for a Pro class... I'm through with promoting those special races. As I see it it's should be up to the Pro's themselves to make it happen & secure purse money. It's very simple actually, all you have to do is ask & you would be surprised who is willing to help out.
You don't need a "Pro" section but a decision maker is very doable in most cases.
Also, the BMX crowd needs to be informed about how they will be treated by the Fairgrounds people, as in since they are racing they should not have to "pay" to get in & let it be known how to get in the race arena in the first place.
I remember my Mom argueing with the ticket-taker dude back in 83" trying to get us into race & him trying to get us to pay to get in even though we were part of the event. Little things like this need to be addressed.

I would be happy to help out. Let me know what you need.
Just a couple of thoughts:
Does someone have a portable 2-4 man gate to set up to let the kids try as they pass by?
How about some loaner bikes/ helmets for passer-bys?
Is the info tent going to be open during the whole fair (opening to closing)?
I think it would be wise if it was.
I think the whole event should be presented as professionally as possible. Nice display of bikes and gear, big TV with videos playing, no 50/50s that are going to bog the action down, a PA that works well and is understandable, etc, etc
I'm sure allot of this has been thought out already, but I just would like this to be succesful, and you never know what little detail may be missed unless someone brings it up.

race times at the fair...
wen. 630-900 thurand fri. sign up times are 600-700 sat. sign ups 300-400 please get there early for it will be very busy with all the stuff going on. it would be very wise to maybe pre-pay for your races on wend. that way there wont be long lines during the rest off the week end also it make registration go alot faster.. as far as having to pay for parking it will be only 5.00 per night they are gong to let us come in and pay and as we travel to the parking lot it passes right by the race track so that you can drop off ll the race gear. unless you get there early enough that you can park right out in front where we park during the indoor season. I will have maps for everyone on tues. we figures that having to pa 5.00 for parking is a small price to pay to get bmx racing involved more in the area, this is our chance to shine and show everyone out at the fair what bmx is all about, the friendships, getting together as family and friends, show how organized it is, and just having a little fun..also we will be going a couple of raffles one for the supercross bike and a 50/50 for money thanks everyone and lets go out and have some fun this next week...

It has been slow going at the fair and building the track. The county is not providing "all the dirt you need " like we were told and the it has been tough to get it out there. Yet things are coming together nicely and we will have a great time and a great track!
We are working to get thing ready to go, if you are looking to help we will need help raking and working the dirt Tues after 1pm thru Wed afternoon.
