Rad Canyon Indoors, Jan 15-16. Random stuff/ RFL news.

Postby bnd » Sun Jan 16, 2005 9:03 pm

- This upcoming RFL at Rad Canyon coming up is probebly the biggest chance for any ABA member that races to promote racing because of the location. If you have a friend or a friend of a friend that would be halfway interested in BMX, bring them out! I have 2 friends that are going to try it & Vincents older bro is going to give it a shot too. Time to step up & bring some new faces to our great sport. Jason Stout is famous for bring tons of people with him to this event, try to do the same.

- :!: Changes are happening in the older classes if you haven't noticed, Bryan Oblad turned up to expert Friday & proceeded to serve notice he'll be a contender. Ian came oh so close Sunday night but got swooped in the main, it will be very soon he'll be up too. Slick Rick is contemplating it.... so this is big news to you older intermediates, the 28+ inter class is going to be wide open for new contenders but you HAVE to get people back out on the 20''s! Kelly pulled it out this weekend & if I went through the BMX'er I could name enough guys for 2 full racks. If you race that class spread the news & give some heads up through e-mails or a friendly phone call. It worked for me. If you haven't already noticed Danita & I are back for hopefully an extended season this year. I only did this really because Danita committed to it but we also want to try to make a differance too, as in trying to make the local scene grow in our classes. She is also working on getting some new girl riders to sign up.

- I'm still buggin about not being able to sell any used stuff at the arena, I have a ton of stuff I would be willing to get rid of for cheap. Over the years I have given stuff literally away to novices & kids who couldn't afford things they need. Why has the arena all of a sudden changed their rules on this from last year? How about a "Garage sale day" at one of the last indoor races? One day for people to bring stuff out & sell? Can I get an answer on this?

- Parents need to keep better track of their kids playing in the bathrooms. I walked in on a posse of them Saturday thrashing the toilets. They plugged a few of them up & kept flushing them, on top of running around & raising hell in general.

- The 9, 10, 12 expert classes are still the ones to watch, those kids are unbelievable. The 5 & under classes are awesome too.

- Iv'e done alot of stupid, dumbass moves in all my years of racing but what I did on Sunday ranks in the top 3. I was sitting alongside of the gate poaching some runs at the beginning of open practice. There was a whole line of riders sitting on top of the gate as I rode onto the track, clipped in, & pedaled up to the top of the gate & was turning around when I stalled, couldn't un-clip & fell over still clipped in.....just laying there hoping nobody over 21 saw me. All the kids on the gate were giggling but as I got up & tried to slink away, I hear a clapping. I look up to see Mike Kelly laughing at me.

- This pic is of Mike Cruz from Rock Springs. He turned intermediate on Sunday.

Thanks for reading.

This goes out to the Rad Canyon crew......there is probebly going to be a pro class at the next indoors, right? I need to know a few things.

- Is there for sure going to be a pro race?

- If so, what night?
I would suggest Saturday night with Supercamp in town & all the race for lifers, it could be Utah's "Saturday night Pro Spectacular".

- If there is a pro race, is there going to be some sort of money purse added to 100% payback?
The last 2 pro races that went on in Rock Springs had a very generous pro purse. The complex kicked down $500 bucks & another couple hundred was added through donations. If the decision to have a pro race with a GUARRANTEED pro purse of lets say $1000 bucks, I can start making some phone calls. Spencer can start making some phone calls. We can get some out -of- staters here & they the pros can put on a great show.
$1000+ sounds like alot but I would imagine if the RC crew went on a mission to collect donations they could easily surpass this amount. Get the purse set, get the message off to all the internet sites, BMX Mania, ABA home page, VBMX, ect .

If you guys want to make this happen, I will do a ton of promoting but this would need to happen THIS WEEK!

Let's do it!

I know your kidding Greg but honestly, $1000 bucks should be no problem in a town this size.

A pro event would be huge on Saturday night, in front of a bunch of new/ maybe new members & people in the crowd. The ball needs to start rolling on this ASAP so you can give others a weeks heads up.

Does anybody give a crap or am I just wasting my breath ?

I'm willing to help spread the word. It sounds like a great idea.

b, I was only half kidding. I do give a crap because I think that it would go along way to attract new riders. You're right about it not being that much of a stretch to get the grand to attract some pros.

The only half kidding part is that I have already put out some feelers to see if I can get somebody interested in sponsoring the pro purse, so if I get bites, who do I write the check to??

I'm just curious to know what people think it would take to get top pros to race a non-national event? I'm not talking about Rad Canyons weekend coming up, but just in general. What about a non-national vet pro race, or girl pro race? I think vet and girl pros have a sparse enough schedule that it may be very attractive to them to be able to race for a good purse even without the ABA national points, etc. I'm just thinking out loud here, but wouldn't it be just too cool to get 3 or 4 tracks together, find some outside support, and put on a mini vet (or girl) pro series!

Anyway, hopefully something will happen.

You just sit tight Greg, without feedback from the people directly involved with such a race I'm not going to do anything just yet.

Bruce, Rob here. I think it would be way cool to have a pro race I talked to todd about it this weekend and he is pretty cool about it. I know that ray said that he was coming down this weekend of the rfl,and redline cup race and that he was getting some other pros together. I know last time he raced at the state qualifier they got 600.00 purse from the people and rad also put a little bit into the fund> Jason melton called but I hav'nt been able to call him back I would also like to get a whole lot of prizes to give away that same weekend.

I am working on getting ahold of Robert. He and I are playing phone tag!!! LOL
What prizes can we come up with? I have some t-shirts to give away and can hit up Lizard Skins for some stuff too!!!
Anybody who can donate stuff will be announced and promoted!
I have talked to Robert and we are going to talk to Dave if the track can donate anything to the pro purse. We are on a very tight budget at Rad indoor due to the fact that we spend alot every weekend we race there to rent the facility!

I have faith in you Jason. You've got the skills to raise some money if need be. What year was it that you raised some kind of kick butt $$$ amount for the RFL ?

I've sent out some feelers to Vegas & Denver about certain pros being invited/coming. I'll know more later & let you know.

On a side note here, for you 28+ inters -
I talked with my bud Dave Hoffman yesterday & he said he would be out to give it a shot again in the 20" class. If you remember he raced at the national & took a bad digger. It screwed up his back & hasn't raced since but he's wanting to return so there's one more guy in your group. Just thought you would like to know.

So, ols Dave Hoffman is coming out of retirement as well. That's awesome! I'm really looking forward to next week. My 20 is all built up and ready. I just have to decide now whether I want to clip in or not. AUDI

I talked to Robert today and ther isnt enough in the budget for Rad Indoor to put up any money for the Pro purse. We would like to but there just isnt enough left after the rent and other expenses!!!
Does anyone have any other ideas of what we can do to get sponsors!!!?
