Utah BMX Video Podcast

Postby sixstringsteve » Thu Jan 05, 2012 10:18 am

Gallo and I (and others) have been kicking around the idea of a doing a regular video podcast for Utah BMX. Kind of in the same vein as the dale holmes podcasts, only a lot shorter, and specific to Utah's scene... and video of course.

Here are the topics we've been thinking of covering. What other topics should we cover? We could probably use one more person to help coordinate this stuff. If anyone (teens included) know their way around a video camera and are interested in helping out, let us know.

Here is the wish list of topics I've put together so far. Remember that I haven't contacted any of these people, so these are just ideas, not commitments.

- track design - talk with a track designer. Have him describe what goes into track design. What he thinks about when he designs a track, etc.
- life as a track operator - interview our TOs and give the rest of Utah some insight into their world: their challenges, joys, frustrations, successes
- Hilight of each of utah's BMX tracks - info, pictures, layouts, unique things (like Roland's BBQs)
- bike setup/sizing/buying a bike for your size - geared towards noobs, possibly delivered by Laketown, Wild Bills, or some other shop
- local BMX-friendly shops - (laketown, wild bills, etc), locations, interviews, etc.
- interviews with some of Utah's top riders (zula, jonas, patterson, sophia, jack kelley, etc)
- transfers - who has transfered to a new class this month. This could be part of every month's message.
- Utah BMX teams - an interview with each team manager. Talk about what it takes to get on their team, what their focus is, etc.

What other topics would you like to see? Any suggestions? I wonder if anyone would watch these if we produced them. I guess we'll just have to try it and find out.

Good news. Our first video podcast will be with Steve Spencer, our track designer. So I'll be conducting a little interview with him this weekend.

We might be lucky enough to get an interview with Mike Day as well.

I need ideas for interview questions. Post up any interview questions you have. I can't guarantee it'll be asked, but I need some ideas. The more feedback, the better.

""- Utah BMX teams - an interview with each team manager. Talk about what it takes to get on their team, what their focus is, etc."

That would take me about 30 or so seconds.

Episode 1 is Live. I'll be working with Jason to find a permanent home for the video podcasts, but here you go:

And I promise my interviewing skills will get better. Go easy on me, it's my first time doing a video interview, and I forgot to bring my notes into the interview. All in all, a HUGE thanks to Mike and Steve for being so willing to participate in this podcast, and thanks to Dale Holmes for the tips on asking interview questions.

So I added a section the home page for the most recent video podcast. I'm going to work on also creating a separate page to hold links to all the videos with descriptions. should have that done in the next week.

Great job Steve in getting this going!

So when do we start building the portable interview studio, complete with anchor desk and comfy chairs? HAHA

No kidding. Don't you just love the sound of the gate dropping every 30 seconds?

And a HUGE thank you Jason for adding that. I've got a few future podcasts lined up, it's exciting to see where this goes.

If anyone would like to be on a future podcast, or if you have ideas of who I should interview, let me know! I'm so new to the BMX scene that I don't really know all the ins and outs of who's involved in our scene. If I haven't mentioned you, but you wanna be on the podcast, let me know! I'm all ears for improvements as well.

I'd love to do a segment once a month where we announce those who have transferred in the past month, regardless of the age or class. But I don't have that info and I'm not really sure who to go to for that.

Once again, excellent work Steve. Well done. It was great to hear from both Steve and Mike. In my opinion, you asked all the right questions. i.e. all the questions we would like to ask people like Steve and Mike, but don't because we think everyone else has asked them that a million times already. Very cool to hear about their backgrounds and that their entry in BMX was no different than most of ours.
Steve I would love to help in any way I am able and as my schedule allows.

Thanks Chris. I wish I had asked Steve what's going through his head as he's designing tracks. Like what he's thinking about when he designs a feature. And asking him what makes a good track and what's the toughest part of building tracks.

ANd I wish I had asked Mike what he's been up to lately and what he's got going on in the future (olympics, etc). But I forgot and got caught up on the moment. Oh well, it actually came out better than I had originally anticpated, and they'll only get better. I'll get another change to catch up with Mike and Steve sometime and I'm sure we'll see them on future podcasts.

I was talking with COG Dave and we were thinking that with all of the new riders and parents that it would be good to have a new rider instructional video on everything from signing up, why you need your number, how to read a moto sheet, bike preparation (no reflectors, pegs, kickstands, etc.), lining up in the gate, semis quarters, etc. I know my kid would love to be a help and JJ Melton already has a good start with his new rider meeting we just need it in video form. Even some of the track etiquette could be explained, like stay off the track when little johnny or jill falls so you dont interrupt the race or d'q your kid. And explain why. And talk a little about sportsmanship etc.
Might be long and could be put into segments. I am sure there are a ton of ideas and input from everyone as to what should or should not be in the video.

I am sure that a lot of the delay in the gate dropping was the difficulty the stagers had with the new riders. Would help things go smoother.

Great idea crash! Let's flesh out an outline and who is going to explain each section, and we can go from there.

Here's my initial thoughts, please let me know what needs to be added...
 How to register ( including UT# & plate # info)
 How to read the moto sheet
 How to properly get thru staging/starting gate
 Basic track etiquette & rules (including sportsmanship for both riders and supporters)
 Basic equipment & bike set up

I'm sure I missed something but I think that's a start...
