- The first production version w/o the pinch bolt is missing.

- There is one version missing from the pic. it would be in the second slot and was still wrapped at the spindle, but not wrapped at the pedal.


So there is 7 total versions of the Flight crank.

Thanks for posting up the history sequence Bruce :D

The first version without the pinch bolts (similar to Profiles) is the 400 series.

Another term for the "wrap around" is "pierced". This is where they drill a hole at the end of the tube and weld in a pedal or spindle boss rather than weld the boss on to the end of a mitered tube. The pierced feature has proven to be much more reliable.

Back in the day if you didnt have Redline Flights you werent cool :P

Steve, I think Iv'e got to correct you on this, your correct about the 400 Series but they weren't the 1st production arms, they were actually the 3rd. The originals (401) were rounded at the spindle but they ran the spline spindle. Then came the first in the picture above THEN the 400 Series you mention. If you remember those had a square spindle & they were mostly junk & came on lower end bikes.
So #1 & #3 in the series are missing in the pictures above.

If my scanner worked I would post pics of said crank arms.

DXRs seem to be "what's cool" today... but I didn't get to have any Flights as a kid (though I did have some SR made aluminum GT Power Series cranks on my 87 PFTTM) so I have the Flights now--and I'm cool. I promise, I have references.

PS: Bruce, a digital camera is just a handheld scanner... just light the source and have a very steady hand. :)

O.K. I see the 180's and the 190's but not seeing the 188mm that were made famous by DD leone in the 80's......And I seem to remember the 401 series having a profile type spline spindle........Thanks for the memories B!

They made the 400 with the splined spindel also,I hade a set on my 82 red line mxII,
(they sucked, Greg Grubbs swapped them to 401s for me at the Jox Jag world championship race in Vegas)
I still have the blue print poster that came with the crank set, it's cool ill try to post it on this thread.

I run the late 90's variety and they are holding up quite well.

I also had the pleasure of knowing D.D. when I lived in Louisiana back in the 80's. He built a really cool track in Marrera, La on some private property that was really long and wound it's way through the forest/swamp.
