Remembering the 1997 ABA Salt Lake National.
Since we have some down time I decided to break out the way back machine & re-visit some races & moments from the past. I decided to start with the first ABA national held at Rad Canyon.
Over the next few days I'll post up pics, thoughts & vid of that weekend.
Here's a picture of what the track was like for starters.
Stay tuned for more.

Re: Remembering the 1997 ABA Salt Lake National.
Tony Lemon, Chris Cogsdil, & Jason Halverson in 19-27 inter. Halvey won that class both days & Tony got a 3rd on Saturday.
Kris Park on the right.
He got a 3rd on Sat. & a 4th on Sunday in 18 expert.
The article at the bottom explains how RC came to be. Written by Pat Simmons, RC's first T.O.
This was Danitas first national & she came very close to winning on Sunday. She was passing the gal in 1st over the last just jump, locked bars & both went down 10ft before the finishline. Her race was talked about in the magazine.

On the team trophies, is "macdaddy racing" the Meltons? Is Commercial tire Xtreme team a previous version of the current extreme team?

Re: Remembering the 1997 ABA Salt Lake National.
Jason came back out of retirement about this time so I don't know if he raced this national or not. Todays team Extreme wasn't around.

That's great! My first national. Started racing less than a year prior. 2nd on Fri, 3rd on Sat. The Butterfield team I was on got a 4th and 5th, Sat and Sun.
I sooooo need to clean out my closet....
Thanks again for the way back Bruce. You are a wealth of BMX history.

Re: Remembering the 1997 ABA Salt Lake National.
Cindy Davis is Billy Davis' sister. He was the photo guy for the bmxer for years before Dan Mooney.
97 was Trav's first national. I wonder how many he has been to since then......we used to make it to about 10 a year ...........

Re: Remembering the 1997 ABA Salt Lake National.
Some notable results form Sunday -
Travis Healey - 1st in 7-8 Mixed Open. 3rd in 8 Inter.
Heather Allred - 2nd in 13-14 Mixed Open. 1st in 13 girls.
Mike Day - 1st in 11-12 Open.
Arielle Martin - 1st in 11 girls.
Chaz Critchfield - 3rd in 5 & under novice.
Matt Baisley - 1st in 9 Inter. (His dad owns Fly).
Bubba Harris - 1st in 11 Expert.
Dylan Collings - 1st in 13 novice.
R.J. Edgington - 4th in 19-27 Inter.
Bryon Wixom - 4th in 28+ Expert.
Lots of others in the results that don't race anymore.
So maybe your wondering where the likes of Spencer & myself were?
I believe Steve was still coming back from a blown knee injury & probebly didn't race this nat. I raced the Pre-race, battled for the lead & had clip issues. Ended up last & mad as hell. My buddy Russ was in town & I watched Saturday & on Sunday's first moto he went down with a broken collarbone so I ended up missing all the days racing while I was at the hospital with him. Not very many of us who raced this national are racing anymore.
Hope you enjoyed reading this!

Re: Remembering the 1997 ABA Salt Lake National.
We didn't know Cindy or her family. Just Billy through the BMXer. He was really good to get Trav in the mag quite often during his early teens....and it helped that he was going fast too! Really nice guy. I still miss his contribution to the magazine!
