Help getting started

Postby Todd Hixson » Sat Jul 25, 2009 2:48 am

I use to race BMX as a kid here in Utah and in Michigan. For me being a "Kid" was a long time ago so that should let you know that I am not up to speed on the current BMX equipment, trends etc. I am interest in getting me and my son into racing.

I am looking for a couple of new or used bikes that won't break the bank but are decent bikes. I am 5'11" 200lbs and my son is about 5'7" 125lbs and growing fast. I am partial to GTs for no other reason than that's what I rode as a kid and currently have as a mountain bike, but I am good with anything. Any info or suggestions you might have will be appreciated.

I don't know if you can buy protective gear from those that out grew it or if you should just buy it new, little help here would be nice also.

I think once I get over this first hurdle the rest will be easy enough to figure out.

Thanks
Todd

Welcome to the site Todd.

Partial to GT?
Your in luck as one of our very own famous old guys around here, Steve Spencer is the TM for the mountain/bmx teams. You can PM him from the membership lists OR you can head up to the Staats store in Sandy & talk to Jason Halverson, he carries GT & races too.

Ian & Heather run Performance Bikes out at the tracks with a mobile bike shop so I would also highly recommend seeing them too. They are at the UCI Worlds right now but should be back out to the track next week.

What class would you race in?

I'm 40 so If I'm not mistaken I am in the 40 + group?

I miss competition bad, I have run marathons, the 2001 light heavy weight Toughman Champion, Kickboxer, wrestled as a kid, etc etc. I crave competition and think this will be the next great fix for me, my wife on the other hand has had about enough though, lol good thing she is forgiving of me.

Todd welcome back. We have a fantastic group of adult riders we have about 15-20 guys over 35 that ride. One of our biggest classes is the 28+ group (mostly 35 0r older) great guys great fun and great competition. Looking forward to seeing you at the track. Watch this site to pick up a bike.

Todd,
Welcome back to the sport!

For GT bikes, I highly recommend Lake Town Bikes. It's a new shop just off of Redwood Road and 90th south, basically in a strip in Home Depots parking lot. Anyway, they carry a full range of GT BMX, MTB, and Road. Good guys to boot. If you do go in, tell them that the GT team sent you in.

But I also secong the other suggestions on Performance bikes at the track, and Staats retail store.
