Race Calendar. Do we need?

Postby J Gallo » Wed Dec 12, 2007 12:15 pm

Some of you remember that I had a BMX race calendar on the site, which was hosted/run by a 3rd party site. Well, I took the link off the site awhile back because I just didn't have time to update it.

And, today I just found they are tripling the yearly subscription price.

So, my question is, does this site (or possibly RAD Canyon's website) need a full fledged race calendar? Something that is broke down by year/month/day? I'm not to keen on the $100 per year price, but I may be able to find another hosted calendar, or just program one myself if the need is there. Keep in mind, this calendar could also list surrounding area track events (Idaho, Wyoming, etc).

I'm interested in your thoughts and suggestions!

I think as long as we keep posting the races on the forums and on the front page it will be okay.

I've been on this site for years and I've never used the calendar. I just check the front page and forums for race times etc...

I think if that info keeps getting pushed to the top of the pages- we'll be okay with omitting the calendar.

Just my thoughts...

I'm interested to see who has used the calendar in the past?

my 2 cents

Postby dantheriver » Wed Dec 12, 2007 4:33 pm

I've always found that most online calendar systems are poorly laid out and cumbersome to use. I think it would acutally be cleaner and easier to use if you just had a single static page that showed race dates grouped by month. Something simple like:

Dec 2007
- 31st: Rad Indoor
Jan 2008
- 5th Rad Indoor
- 14th Wyoming
Feb 2008
-...
...

That's just my 2 cents. Thanks for keeping this site going!

Dan,

I totally agree with you and I think that is the direction I'm going. However, I do know that some calendars have options like syncing to Outlook, RSS feed, etc that some find useful.

Thanks for the feedback guys, anyone else?

I like the list approach, it is nice however to see Idaho, wyomong and some of the closer races posted. Not to hard to find on your own though. New riders would really benefit.

Hey Jason-

I will be launching my next site version around Jan 1. I can give you a calendar(s) that you can scrape from or pull with RSS.

I was actually referring to what his site changes would be, and any new features he was adding :D

Well, it is still very much on the drawing board. The main reasons for changing were lack of flexibility with the photo albums from both an admin and user perspective. I wanted a faster album, slide show speed options for the users, notifications via subscription, functioning download photo links, option to purchase wholesale photos (have the service, but not sure if I will implement), etc.

I think I will accomplish the majority of the above. I had has also been toying with a few things like and events calendars with both RSS and notifications and ability to sort by category (National, local, state, RFL, etc.), gear ratio calculator (ugh – this hurts my brain), printable gear charts, etc.

So I guess the best way to answer your question is I HAVE NO IDEA HOW IT WILL LOOK!

I don’t have much of anything on the site as of this time since I just brought up the box (heck, still not even sure on graphics!), but you can hit it at http://166.70.86.37
It is a little slow at the moment, especially if I have reset the app pool and you are the first visitor after that. Also, as things progress, you will run into links back to truebmx.com These links will fail (obvious to u and me) as the current site will remain online until the final switch is made.

Forgot to mention that if things go well  you can register for an event so others can see if you are planning on attending.
