Paved berms
Paved berms
Deseret Peak is thinking of paving the first & second berms. This would save on alot of track maintance. Let us know what you think. Again thanks for a great year.

Hi Darren,
Paving the dirts would help not only with the maintenance but would increase traction. I would suggest rebuilding the first turn with a larger diameter to enhance the flow and add more lines. Let me know if you need any help.
Keep up the great work with DPBMX!

There are a couple of ways to apply asphalt to a large turn depending on your resources. The most effective way is to have a loader dump/scatter the hot asphalt along the top edge of the turn while a crew of hand workers spread it out so there is a consistent layer (about 8 to 10 inches). The process is repeated all the way down to the inside riding line of the track. The very top edge of the turn should be capped with at least a three foot skirt down the backside of the turn to protect the top edge from erosion. Once all spread out a hand roller is used to pack in the asphalt and any peaks or valleys that are left behind are worked out.
Once done you have a carvable and virtually maintenance free turn.

Darrin,
As a long time supporter of DP (the longest, since it started in 99') here's my opinion.
The track is in need of a major facelift. Most of the track is in pretty bad shape. I went out 3 times this year & I havn't seen it in this poor of shape in years. The berms are hammered, the jumps are worn down & weathered......you get the picture.
If Davis County gets approved for an outdoor track next year I would imagine they would race on Saturday mornings. Unless you have a newly rebuilt track to entice racers to come out to DP instead of the same 'ol thing that has been out there since 04', well your moto counts & rider numbers are going to go down the toilet. Unless DP gets a GOOD solid makeover it hurts me to say that alot of the DP faithful, including me, would be hard pressed to make the drive out there to race on something that hasn't changed in 4 years. Especially after spending the morning on a new track right off the freeway. Iv'e always been fond of DP, that's why Iv'e helped out over the years but I see DP dying a slow death if things don't change.
Hire a professional like Steve to come in & rebuild the track THEN pave the corners! Your going to have to do some work on the berms anyways before paving them, might as well do the whole track in one shot.
With a rebuilt DP, we here at the site would be MORE than happy to jump in & help promote the track.
It's your decision what gets done, hopefully you'll take my ideas & at least think about them. Good luck.

Why only pave the first and second turns?? If you pave one, you might as well pave them all! I like the idea to re construct the track first and then pave the new track turns. The track needs a new fresh design before solidifying the turns with asphalt. Peace to all! H.

Shifter,
What is the suggestion you have put forth as I have not received word of it and I am involved in the berm paving project for Rad Canyon. Any help would be appreciated.
Hammerdown68,
With current layout of the DP track the last turn is not a maintenance or a traction issue. It is more of a sweeper turn and paving isnt needed. Plus specialty paving is expen$ive. At about $4.00 to $5.00 per square foot a decent sized turn can cost around $15,000
A track footprint redesign at DP is limited to its gate position and its perimeter fencing and its current U-inside-a-U is the best layout for its restrictions. Significant changes can be made with the U-track by changing berm shapes and jump sequences.

I've mentioned this to Ron before and some of the tracks that I've been to around the country that have paved turns paid for them by selling them to companies or businesses and they painted their logos in the turn. Also to keep the paint from being slippery they put sand in the paint like when you put texture on a shop floor to keep it from being slippery.

Hi Rope,
That was one of the original ideas we had to advertise sponsors or even to get the paving company to drop their price. No takers so far. If there are some ambitious salesmen out there who are willing to chase down some berm sponors it would be greatly appreciated. It is kind of difficult to find someone to kick down $10k to $15k for a billboard that will only be seen twice a week five months out of the year. We would have to create a tiered pricing program to gather multiple sponsors to cover the costs. Other types of fundraisers can be set up to raise money too. Lots of ideas floating around but current resources are slim to none to support them. The crew that runs a majority of Rad Canyons operations have their hands full as it is so the riders and the families would be needed to help support the fundraisers and sponsorship.
Is there someone out there willing to spearhead the cause?
Anyone?, anyone?.... Bueller?
