Track Design Contest - Redline Cup
I am looking for some fresh ideas for the Redline Cup track this weekend and I am looking to the UTAHBMX family for some help. So break out your big box o' Crayons and start doodling. Please send all your drawings to me at steves@staatsbikes.com. The deadline will be by Thursday 1/27 @ 4:00pm. I will post up the winner that evening.

Since I cant draw and never win anything anyway, I will just throw out some ideas on here and see where they go!!!!
How about tunnel? Maybe a water jump with those sharks with some lazers on their heads? Maybe we could take the track up the ramps and a bonzai off the wall to the arena floor?

I dont think we can bring 6-packs into the building unless you are talking about your ab's
Three sets of doubles would be cool! We should be able to do that. Size may be around 4' tall x 15' long for each set, pending the dirt situation.

I can't send a pic either Steve, I can't get my scanner working & the boss doesn't get home ''till late Thursday.
Here's some ideas that are just that, ideas.....
- Remember the 2nd straight from the 98' Boise national, very sweet, high-speed 6 pak, kindof what Mackdaddy is talking about. Something that doesn't take a whole lot to clear & is very fast.
- Your last layout indoors was great because the first roller was not that huge & I liked the step-down backside you put on it. I KNOW your going to put a roller there so make it about halfway so you at least got your speed up first. Your step going into the first turn was AWESOME, just the right size to either manual or skim-jump.
- Third straight, decision maker for sure but make it long & fun on both sides. If jumps are used on one side make them no more than 18ft" long apiece. Throw in a table or 2 for less skilled riders. Your rythem(?) section from 2 races ago was great. It really wasn't a rythem section but it was fun, & you know what I mean.
- Last straight, I like Travis's idea. Make a standard rythem but also make a decision maker with maybe a big 20-25ft double, ala: 99' Grands, make sure there is a ton of run up to it.
That's about it, one question, are you going to utilize the area where Ian's trailer is parked? Are you going to take the 2nd berm back into that area? If you do, make sure you leave alittle room so people sitting on that side of the arena can get to staging.
Sorry if this got long but I'm really excited about this weekend! I'll be out after work on Friday to push a rake.

You bring up some good ideas and we can put them in but we have a few limitations:
- The 6-pack idea should be a do'er
- Both you and Matt Spencer were diggin' on the first jump. I was thinking about the same height but a longer step down??? Any taller and we might and to put a phone book in front of it for you
- The step-table into the first turn was a fav' too. I might try a variation of it???
- A third straight split may not flow as well as a second straight split. A decision-maker straight needs to empty into a good sized turn to allow for the two different entry lines.
- The rythym from January 1st was a good one due to the fact we had a little more dirt than normal. We should be able to duplicate a section with a similar feel to it.
- A big pro dub' down the last straight would be cool but a 20' - 25'er might be a bit too big for our crowd. We might only have a few people who can jump it and that is a lot of dirt and time to use on something for a handful of people. It seems if we can build a good sized gap jump that Cody Kelly on up can jump, it creates more enthusiasm with the younger crowd but still is a challenge for all ages and abilities. Plus the dirt jumpers were still able to strut their stuff.
- There will be room behind the second berm. I am going to have Ian park the trailer by the back wall and I am going to pile dirt up against the trailer so you can wall ride up on the trailer off the top of the second berm
Thanks for the input Bruce! Any and all ideas will be taken into consideration. Even the wildest of ideas can lend to a cool jump or section. I hope through everyones input, we can coem up with an exciting track.
My primary considerations are:
- RFL and new riders. In order to for the RFL to be a success we need to have a track that wont be intimidating to the "newbe's". If they have a good time, the track/sport will have a better rider-return ratio for future races.
- 90% of the riders are novice and intermediate. And a majority of those riders are under the age of 13.
- With the increased track area and additional dirt, I expect higher track speeds from all abilities and ages. There will also be a Pro class. These factors mean the track will have to flow with the higher speeds yet be as safe as possible.
The experienced riders will still be challenged, if they choose to challenge themselves. A "challenge' does not necessarily mean the track has to be more technical. The challenge is up to the rider and to the level they want to take it. Just because a rider can jump all the obstacles at a track does not indicate they have "conquered" the track. You can always try new lines, decrease your lap times, etc. You just have to keep pushing yourself and think outside the proverbial box.
My goal for this weekend, as is for every track I build, is for EVERYONE TO HAVE FUN and BE SAFE!!!

steve, since there won't be any cattle guards in the way we might be able to take the first straight right into the wall big first turn making a pro split down the second straight bank off ebellys trailor and a nice rythem down the third straight bank off the wall with a stepup table then a double down the last straight?

We may not be able to pile dirt against any of the walls but we will see. When I talked to the arena crew last they are looking to dig down near the sand level (about 10" deep) all the way around the floor 2-3 feet away from the wall. I am expecting about 200 - 250 yards more of dirt, which is not much but should help in making the jumps and turns bigger than what we have had.
To show you a comparison in the volume of dirt, Rad Canyon outdoor consists of approximately 3500 yards of dirt (think of 350 dump truck loads!), not counting the starting hill. The indoor will have less than half of that (1500 yards or 150 dump trucks).
We also have a time constraint. We will have roughly 10 hours to get the track built on Friday. A national track usually takes four 12 hour days to build. So if we have half the dirt and only 25% of the time to do it in, we will be scrambling to get it done.

how about we pull all of the dirt out and put visqueen on the floor, a little hawian tropic in the microwave and have a hot oil party?
Track lay out
Mabey there could be a one trun that you go aroud twice. Because there Arn't two Races going at the same time or are thier. it's only like a half a min. longer to wait so it could make more Drit for the rest of the track and faster truns. so like the frist trun and the last trun are the same.
