I just started following this forum and have decided one thing that Jason has already mentioned. Everybody helps out in their own ways, wether they know it or not. I really think it is unfair to give credit to just a few people- when everybody helps.
A few examples I have seen at Rad Canyon alone are;
- The 13-14 Expert Class: They are not only friends (which really helps in racing) but they are always telling each other "good race". A recontition of how a rider did- even if he or she didn't qualify- can help riders self esteem in more ways than one, it's a simple and easy thing for riders to say, and it really helps new riders feel better about how they placed.
- The older, more experienced riders (IE: Arielle Martin, Todd Parry, Steve Spencer-) Being friendly to kids. I remember when I first met Arielle, I thought she was just a new rider and she was as friendly as ever, and actually gave me tips on where you were more likley to crash (we were at the Rad Canyon Indoor track.) That was a really neat experience for me because I got to talk to a pro and actually felt like an equal to her. That always makes me feel good.
- Again, Ian and Heather (and Hollie too) are another great example of helping out without knowing they have done a thing. I remember when Dani Donner started riding, she complianed because she had to race Hollie and Katie. In staging before the race Hollie told her "Good luck- I bet you'll do really great." It not only helped Dani calm down a little bit- but she felt better and had a little more confidence in herself than before. Every time I see Ian or Heather racing people they are always really friendly in the staging area, that not only eases the jitters that can be felt in staging, but get riders minds off of the doom they may face in their moto.
- I know that the 16Xperts are always helping younger kids out too. (Alot of riders do that- but this is one example that stands out in my mind.) One in staging I heard a rider tell Robby Patterson and Cody Kelley "I am so going to need a miracle to qualify against you two." Robby turned to that rider and smiled. "Well, miracles do happen. Just ride hard." That was a really neat experience to see because it was from one rider to another and it gave that rider hope.
Okay, I guess it's time to get off my soapbox- I hope I didn't get to of subject or put you to sleep. but these are just a few examples of how racers can help- without helping.
Keep smiling!
