66 motos. Great turnout but for some reason there wasn't a buzz in the air liek there has been at the previous indoors. I think a combination of a very late night of Friday night racing & bad weather toned it down somewhat.
The wife & I actually had the night to ourselves with the little ones at home so we were both able to race 2 classes with no worries. D raced the 41 novice class & got the crowds attention with a great 1st moto win. Outside lane in the main & one of the dudes stepped it up & beat her, nice work. Just so you guys know, she probebly won't be around in that class next race as the 28+ gals are recruiting for ladies to get on their 20"s & get that class rolling, so you can all breath a sigh of relief.
The 28+ Open had 26 riders in it, actually 25. A 24 yr. old snuck in but was booted after the 1st round. Listen guys, if you want RC to offer a 27 & under open, JUST ASK FOR IT! Don't ask to make an exception to enter the older open, if they let 1 guy in then next race 4 will want in & that's not fair for the class.
The race of the motos, 1/4's & semis had to be Heather Allred vs. Greg Baumgart, Heather railed the last corner & it was a drag race to the finish, photo finish with Greg edging her out.
Props to Jonas Harmon for the big win in the Main. Kevin Dilley walked away with the give-a-way prize of a GT Micro MIni. Just to put out the word, I am looking for a prize sponsor for next race, ANYTHING will do including lightly used items. COG's & Legacy got race #1 & Utah BMX.com got #2, needing #3 (&4) in February. Please contact me if you would like to donate.
- Props to Tony Lemon for making the Open main & my apoligies for calling him an Intermediate.
- Props to Mike Oblad for going really, really fast & looking great out there.
- Props to Ian Elliot for racing for the 1st time in 10 years.
- I checked out the new "Extreme" bike frame. I love the fact that it's made in the U.S.A.
Iv'e got to put this out there to the track builders, can we posssibly get some obstacles down the 2nd straight that can be jumped/cleared by your average 30+ intermediate? Years ago it used to be (Steve Spencer) called the "Bruce & Mike Kelly rule" or something like that. Some nice, flat table tops or shortened up dubs that the 80%'tile can take a chance on & clear?
I honestly don't have a problem with the tracks nowadays but I did have a few discussions with others that said it would be nice to have something they can jump that isn't on the last straight. Table going into the first turn & table in the 2nd straight? Just a thought.
Any word on how that lady is doing that got taken out in the ambulance? Speaking of the wounded, Bryon Wixom has been in the hospital for awhile now. I'll have more info by the end of the day on him. He's talking & seems to be in good spirits. It has something to do with blood clots & busted up ribs.
- The BMX Moto sheet APP ROCKS!!
Here are a few pics form the nights racing.
...& last but not least, I had a special treat for the night. This guy on my right is Scott Price. In 1984-85ish was one of the fastest guys in the State & owned 17 expert for a time with Russ Newcomb & Nathan Toone. I haven't seen him since late 1985!
Is he the long lost twin of John Alvey or what?

Re: RFL review.
Thanks for the props Bruce!!
I love the new 28+ open class!! It gives me more laps against other riders that I don't normally race without the obligation of another membership or another bike.
I love the new motos online page!! It let's me check motos from home so I can validate the reason I'm not spending $30 to race today. Park, Edwards, and Barton. Yeah, I think I'm the odd man out there.
I totally agree with Bruce on the pro level jumps point. I'd love to be able to mix it up with some jumps that allow me to jump/manual without updating my health insurance first. Racing and jumping is fun, but recently the jumps are just big enough that they're not worth the risk, especially during a race.
Get well Wixom. I hadn't heard about his injury until now. BMX related? Either way, heal up buddy, you just made a comeback, no reason to have to make another.
Ian Elliott. I remember he raced out at DP maybe 2 years ago. State qualifier. Dave Cote and I threatened to let him win so he could finally out grow his 'intermediate for life' status. He threatened to lay down on the track if we did.
I think we have the greatest program here in Utah. It's grown quite a bit since my return in late '08, and I'm sure it'll continue to grow. I myself know of a small handful of riders that were not necessarily racers back in the day, but definitely riders, joining the sport. I also know of a few that are on the verge of joining up for the first time.
So, here's to a great 2012 season!! May we all continue to improve our skills, our lives, and our relationships, on and of the track.

I'd just push the "like" button if I could but that would be lost on several of you.
Love love love the 28+ open! Like loco tone says, it's fun to race against guys (& gals) that i otherwise wouldn't be able to. Lots of motos when racing class, cruiser and open but chalk it up to great fun and good training. I was pretty well gassed but was glad to be able to ride.
COG is in for some more sponsorships, Bruce.
BMX brings happy funntimes.

Bruce,
My sponsor Pure Workout at www.pureworkoutslc.com will sponsor next 28+ open with a 2 week membership valued at a little over $85.00. You can decide on how you want to give it away. You can get with me on the specifics and contact info for the gym throughout the next week or so.
Thanks,

Re: RFL review.
Another great weekend for Utah BMX. Great racing on a challenging track. Lots of fun meeting some new people and finally talking to some I have seen around for awhile. Proud of my sons for putting in a good effort all weekend.
Happy to add to the chorus of "love the 28+ Open!" This race is a total riot. I know I am just moto-fill, but I sure have a great time. One of the highlights of my weekend was rounding turn 2 in a tight group of many of the best in Utah (or anywhere else!). Thanks for letting me be part of this very cool experience.
Props to BJ for his great, exciting and entertaining calls of the races. One of these times I am going to just fall off my bike mid-race because he is going to make me laugh so hard. BJ, thanks also for the great new set-up on my bike. It feels great and is just pure fun running it around the track!
Thanks to the track staff. They had a very tough night Friday dealing with technical issues. I appreciate all they do to allow us to compete and have fun. We couldn't do it without them; thank you.
