ABA Grands post game reports.

Postby bnd » Sun Nov 29, 2009 9:48 pm

I wasn't able to watch until Sunday right before the cruisers started, bad internet in Wyoming.......

Anyways, we watched the rest of the mains & it was pretty exciting.

- Robby's cruiser main, nice save in the 1st corner to get a 2nd, nice!

- Clift holeshotting the 41 inter class & holding that lead until turn two, must of been exciting being in that position & pressure packed. Nice work.

- Heather & Holly going 1-2 in 26-30 girls cruiser.

- Jack Kelly in the 6x main.
How the f*&% does a 6 yr. old get dq'ed after having to work out of gate 8 in a short straight? I feel very bad for him & his family, esp. after they didn't anounnce it until maybe 10 motos later. That's got to be devistating for a little kid. I made mention of this over at V & everybody seems to agree that it's a shame. Was this an official call or a protest by another riders parent?

I'm missing a few others so hopefully some in here can chime in & give props.

Everyone did great! The Jack Kelly thing was total BS, I think that may have taken him out of NAG1 (?). There should be a lot of NAG plates coming back to Utah this year. I know Robbie Ended up NAG2. Danny and Dan Sr may have also hit top 10. I know both Heather and Hollie did (I think Heather is NAG 1 again). Hayden Brown ended up NAG 8 on Cruiser (making all us UT01 Cruiser riders move up a notch-thanks Hayden) and Hunter Brown will as well. Mackenzie and Jasmine probably both got one as well as Steff Gansen. I'm probably leaving a ton of people out, but they'll post it all up soon enough.

Well, I made it through Girl Cruiser and the Pros before I fell asleep watching. It was a little after midnight here, but I am pretty disappointed I did not get to see the class races.

Complete bummer to hear about Jack Kelly and very unusual to hear it announced motos later. That call almost always comes immediately after the race. The call is not supposed to be a parent protest, but this sounds like it was. The call is supposed to come only from the ABA and usually comes from the gate starter who calls it in to Bill while the riders are going down the front straight. Anyway, there are a couple of dads in Jack's group that are real pieces of work and pretty obnoxiously arrogant. I bet one of them cornered Bill with a video and would not let the issue go. While I did not see what he was called for, this sounds like a really, really suspicious call. I hope Mark cornered Bill and well and at least spoke him mind.

Congrats to all of the Utah riders. You guys gave us internet watchers quite a show. We really missed being there this year, but had a blast watching most of the ROC and Grands on the 'net.

The Grands weekend had been so fun to watch. I'm happy for so many riders. I've had many conversations this past year about the most improved riders and certainly now Hayden is one of the most improved over the last year. Going from Intermediate last year to dominating on his cruiser, finishing 4th at grands, and gettin a NAG plate. Hard work pays off way to go Hayden.

My family is sick over what has happened to Jack Kelly. We were all huddled around the computer as the announcer was getting all eyes on Jack because with a win Jack would be taking over the National rider points lead. Everyones eyes were on Jack in gate 8 that was watching that race. When the gate dropped I was doing a play by play, Jacks got a good gate, a really good gate, he's pulling away, He's moving over and he has the lead. I've replayed that in my mind several times thinking about what could justify a D.Q. and there is nothing. He did not pop out of the gate and slam over on the rider next to him and move the herd of riders over. He powered his way clear and then moved over. 4 pedals and your to the 30' line. Without a replay I can't say he didn't start moving over before the 30' but I highly doubt it. He did what every expert is taught to do and he is by far the dominant rider in his age group and no matter what happens he is our NAG champion in my mind.......

The bad thing is explaining it to my kids (6 and 10 years old)that watched the race and were so happy for Jack. They don't understand why he was D.Q.'d and feel very bad for Jack. What a travashamockery.....

Our family is still sick to our stomaches about what happend to Jack. We also watched the race and from our vantage point Jack shot out of the gate like his nickname states "cannonball" Although I did not see if it was after the 30ft. line, I can say with certainty that Jack Did not move over and impede anyone. He looked as though he was a bike length ahead right out of the gate. Although I do not have all the details as I only spoke to Mark for a few minutes last night, it seems as though the "parent" that complained now has a Nag#1 rider in his family.

How unfortunate is it that you teach your child that hard work, good sportsmanship, and being respectful leads to success and then something like this happens to a 6 year old. I can tell you first hand, that Jack Kelly is one of the best kids out there. I have seen him work SOOOOO hard this year. The thousands of gates he has done, the sprints, the workouts....

He spends most of his local race time racing against kids a year and a half older then him and never gets down, never is a sore sport, and always driving himself to improve. He is THE Dominant 6 year old in the country and our champion!

Unfortunately, our 6 year old champion "Jack Kelly" has far more character then alot of the parents at these sporting events.

i guess the aba needs to spend some $$$ on some barbed wire fencing that seperates the lanes for the first 30 feet or at least some chaulk...JACK YOU DOMINATED ALL YEAR AND EVERYONE KNOWS IT!!!

Rule from ABA Rule Book 2009

XIII. Racing Rules

29. A rider determined by an official to have intentionally impeded the progress of another rider during the first 30 feet
of the race may be disqualified
. To facilitate this rule, it is recommended that a clearly visible line extend across
the width of the track, placed at a point 30 feet from the starting gate.

I would have made them pull the rule book out and show me the video showing the intent to impeded, it doesn't say that you can't move over during the first 30 feet.

I think I've seen some Euro tracks with lanes drawn out about 30'.

Must see replay!

At the same time, it was announced something to the effect of "for actions in the starting gate"... wasn't that the wording used? So are we talking a "move over too soon"?

I'm steamed about it though! Jack's too good of a racer and kid for that. He just outright out raced them all!

We don't need lanes, because as Ropelato pointed out, the rule isn't that you have to stay in your lane, but that you can't move over and impede another rider until 30 feet.

Good point. If I'm in 8 and there are open lanes next to me, I'm coming over right outta the gate. But, I guess I mention the lanes to maybe lessen the ambiguity and subjectivity of such calls.

First off, Thanks for all the positive comments. It actually brought my manly ass to tears. The guy I spoke to from the ABA told me that Jack turned left right out of the gate and clipped the kid in lane sevens front tire and almost crashed him. That definitely didn't happen. Another track official told me that the guy watching the front stretch was positive that he did that but they would not call foul unless another parent came and complained. I was standing about 10 feet past the 30' line and I do believe he moved before the line, but I do not believe that he impeded another riders progress, and if you know Jack, definitely not intentionally. I am going to wait for the videos to come out on go211 and maybe they will shine some light on this for us.
Thanks again for all the support,The Kelly's

Mark, thinking how hard that must have been for Jack to hear (not excluding his super proud dad) makes my wussy ass come to tears! I watched the thing live and I don't recall anything that looked bad. I, too, want to see the video. It's a damn shame! Jack is a great kid and Lucas really admires him. Tell him we think he's the best!
