Indoor racing circa Sept. 1983.

Postby bnd » Tue Dec 09, 2008 9:35 pm

Iv'e got a ton of old photos as do the Sleaters & Roland Critchfield. One of the projects (too many!) is to document each & every track that has exsisted in Utah. One of the best venues was the Super Series Indoor track held at the old, now torn down Utah Fairpark Collusium. They had races there from around 81'(?) to 87(?) with a break in between to race at a different building on the same property, the old Beef Barn for 1 or 2 years.

Anyways before these get shot over the Old School Pic of the Day thread I thought I would share these with you all.

This is a 16 expert moto taking off. Sightings in this pic include the dude crossing the finishline, white jersey w/ his back to you is Dave Hoffman. The guy in front of him doing the powerslide is my brother. The rider 3rd from the left outta the gate in the red/white is Scott Taul. The dude on the far right on the gate, red & white (237?) is Chris Clift. 39-16 was the standard gearing for this tight track.
Image

This was 17 & over or novice. I'm 2nd from the inside.
Image

17 & over expert w/ Mike Poulson, Darin Peery (?), Mike Miner & Griffin Law.
Image

Ok, you got to look close, this is me going over the table top, right above my back is the announcing area. L_R is Jason, Ron & Wade Melton w/ Nancy standing on the ground in front. Off to the right of Nancy in the red & white uni is Scott Taul, up a few stairs coming down in the white is his sister Heather (Taul) Edwards. I had just turned 17 so all these others were 16 years & younger.
Image

This place was alot of fun, racing was tight, alot of crashes & bar banging. Not a bad seat in the house & up until later 84' they would have up to 100 motos per night.

Unfortunaly the pic w/ Clift & Heather are cropped out. I guess the pic was too big for the site or something.......or maybe it was Chris's mullet that was too big. :D

You should be able to right-click the pictures and tell it to Show Image or, View Image in new window/tab and see Clift in all his mulleted glory. It almost looks like he's got a Hutch jersey on with the whirlwind on the body and the colored sleeves with the stars...

That's some good stuff, man!

It could also be one of those Hutch sponsored "Superbowl of BMX" shirts. A few months earlier in the summer during the Utah State Fair they had a one of those races in the rodeo arena.
Chris rode a Robinson & turned expert before I really started to come into my own in novice/inter. By the time I turned expert he retired. He raced against my brother most of the time though.

I can't get the pics to enlarge like you said Brent.???

I'll post up some more pics tomorrow.

I think the shirt I mentioned was their freestyle one--and it would have been Woody Itson pink... and we KNOW Chris wouldn't be wearing PINK!

I was using Google Chrome (browser) for the instructions from earlier (right click, open image in new tab or window). In IE (7), right click, select "Properties", and then you can copy and paste the URL to the image directly... resulting in: http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL144/16 ... 569737.jpg

In Firefox, just right click on the image and select "View Image".

Mac users will have to wait for Curtis... but it's probably an "option click" or click and hold to get the context menu to pop up...

Yes, me = geek...

Of course, you COULD resized them all a tad with XP Image resizer (google it).

Hey Jason, is that you lifting the gate in the second picture?
Bruce, we race in the Coliseum in '78-'79 on dirt then it was moved to
Kotter Farms Arena while they cemented the floor.
If you thought it was small for BMX, they actually had flat track motorcycle
races in there when it was dirt.

Is that Dale Yohe in the Robinson gear in the first photo? In that photo with Tauls and Chris Clift you can also see an 11X John Alvey sitting there is his Robinson gear.

I'll try and put up a few more photos of that place when I get home. We also have some of the 84 (?) Salt lake Nationals at the Fairgrounds outdoor arena, the Beef Barn, Riverview, Provo, Ogden Downhill, Jordan River, and Park City all from that era.

Justin,
Could you send me any & all pics form the beef barn via e-mail? bndrace@comcast.net. I used to have some but they got lost. That place was the worst, cold inside, bad dirt, the smell...! Crowded, ugh. I remember there was some talk about combining the two buildings, having to race back & forth between the two. It never happened.

I'll send them later tonight.

In the first pic, is the Kuwahara guy in gate 2 Chris Seamons?

Yeah, left to right is Sean Marchant, Chris Seamon & on the right of the pole, Orlando Delgado.

Chris Seamon & his little bro Clint were sponsored by Ricks Bikes out of Midvale. Seems to me that Chris had a Co-Factory deal with Kuwahara. Both were really good. I think in the summer of 84' Midvale held a bicycle road race, Chris signed up & won it. He later turned A-Pro & had some success. I can't remember the excate year (85-86-87?) Chris was killed in a motorcycle accident. Clint never returned to BMX. I remember Chris as being very, very nice & an excellent racer. I have his obit somewhere.

This round of pics were from 84'. I was expert in Nov. so unless I was racing out of class this was a 17 expert gate. L-R goes.......
Eric Nikoliason (Dan Donners bro-in-law?), Victor Brown, me, Dave Hoffman in the yellow & Mike Miner.
Image

Shane Turpin on the outside of Gary Kirby. Hey, that's Jack Taul watching the action!
Image

Top pic.....Ray Edminston & Dave Hoffman. The yellow jersey Dave was sporting is a Free Agent jersey. He had the very first Free Agent in the State & one of the first production frames made when the company first appeared in 84.

Bottom....Scott Brown on the inside & Dan Belmont sliding in.
Image

My brother Andrew in the middle w/ Dave on the outside.

An early moto sheet from Riverview 1983. Check the names.
Ron Duncombe is the Maverick Monster tracker/truck driver!

I'd like to see some pics of the Riverview Jr. High track. I went to school their and remember the track looking so awesome. As I remember it now it was probably a pretty tight small track. I never raced I just rode the track a little.

I'd love to see more of this history aswell keep it coming.
