Reno Nats Report

Postby Curtis Newkirk » Fri Sep 02, 2005 5:09 pm

Well, we pulled into Reno early this afternoon and went straight to the Reno Livestock Event Center. What a place! The track and the facilities are the best I have seen yet (with the exception of Rad). Steve did an amazing job on the track and this is definitely the best indoor facility I have seen.

So far I have seen quite a few Utah folks. Should be an exciting weekend of racing. I am pretty lousy with keeping up with results, but I will do what I can!

Justin and I were hoping to make it to Reno this year but I used the money to fly us to Ohio. We are having fun but missing out racing. A good friend of mine lives here. I've heard from many that it is flat here. You have to see it to believe it. They're mountains would work great as jumps on a BMX track.

Good luck to all those that travel to Reno!

From the report I got everyone rode exceptionally well. I hope I don't get anybody wrong.

Tana Gazdik - 2nd Girls
Terri Gazdik - 3rd Girl Cruiser
Mike Kelley - 2nd Cruiser
Cody Kelley - 2nd Class
Mitch Ropelato - 2nd Class
Robbie Patterson - 2nd Class
Mitch Froisland - Crashed in the Main (Possible twisted ankle)

Sorry I don't know how Bennett Newkirk, Travis Healey or Ian & Heather placed or if they even raced. I apologized to anyone else if I missed you just going by word of mouth.

That sounds about right Rope. Congrats for a great first night to the Utah crew. Now the racing REALLY begins!

Bennett raced, but had a rough night. The first moto he was...well..not Bennett. The second moto he was SuperBennett and blew not one, but both pedals coming right out of the gate. He finally got clipped in in the first turn, but was in last by about 50 feet by then. The little guy worked his tail off and caught the group, but DNQ'ed. Oh well, after a few adjustments we hope to be chalking this one up to 'working the bugs out'. Best to do that on Friday rather than at the Big Show!

More tomorrow and have a great night!

Update: Mitch Froisland broke his tibula and fibula. Mike Kelley had him at the hospital until about 1AM last night. The kid has a heart of gold though and is taking it all in stride. More later...

Goin' to reno, to play some keno, in the casino!

Postby JasonStout » Sun Sep 04, 2005 11:54 pm

Dave Williams called me Thurs. afternoon and asked, "Are you going to Reno?" I said, "No, I'm moving this weekend." He said, "you wanna go, my boss will pay the motel!" I said, "It's on! Let's go!"

I called my sponsor- they agreed to pay for racing. I called my girlfriend, Shellie, She offered to pay for the gas! I had no excuses not to go!

Friday at 4:00 p.m. We all headed out to Reno. A straight shot down I-80. We arrived at midnight, assembled bikes, carbed up at Denny's- then took a quick nap- then it was race time!

The track was awesome! It kicked my butt the whole weekend! Dave W. was sick all day- poor guy- but was high in spirits. He struggled his first round, then put together a pretty good 2nd round. It just wasn't enough to qualify, but he said he had fun.

My first rounds I took 3rd. They were taking 2 and 2. I qualified for my Semi in cruiser, and qualified straight to the main in class. A photo finish showed by Brazilian buddy ahead of me before the line, and me ahead after the line, so the rule states- they had to go with the call. The call went to me- Lucky transfer.

My cruiser semi- I think I took a nap on the track, cuz I forgot to race! I ended up not qualifying for the main! I took a 5th- but needed a 4th to go on! I was in shock! Live and Learn. I had the chance of knocking some dude off the track for the qualifying spot- I tried a bump and run, but that never works on the inside line- everyone knows that! You gotta finish 'em or forget it! ;)

Class main was a blast! I came out of the gate really great! Then the bonking begain! I bonked every obstacle on the track- twice! It was ugly. I ended up getting beat by the likes of Pee Wee Lee, and gang! I beat the grandmaster, so the day wasn't an entire loss! ;)

Reno has proven to be on of the toughest nations to attend. The tracks are always awesome and challenging. The competition is the same. The trip has always been worth it. I look forward to hangin' with the Utah crew!

Congrats to everyone and their finishes! Get well soon Mitch!
